This interactive lecture explores the key components of airway assessment and management. Establishing and maintaining a patent airway and ensuring effective oxygenation and ventilation are vital aspects of effective patient care. This includes early detection of airway and breathing problems, rapid and effective intervention, and continual reassessment of a patient with airway or breathing compromise.
After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:
- Discuss the physiology of breathing, including ventilation, oxygenation, and respiration.
- Describe factors related to the pathophysiology of respiration, including hypoxemia, hypoxia, hypoventilation, and hyperventilation
- Discuss how to assess for adequate and inadequate respiration
- Distinguish respiratory distress from respiratory failure
- Discuss the key components of airway management, including patient positioning, suctioning, airway adjuncts, oxygen-delivery devices, and artificial ventilation
- Discuss special considerations for newborn resuscitation and airway management of pediatric patients
Practitioners who successfully complete the Ventilation (EMT Edition) course are eligible for 1 hour of continuing education
