reatment of shortness of breath can often be challenging given the difficulty in determining the etiology of a patient’s symptoms. EMS practitioners must therefore focus on those therapies proven to benefit the patient.

This module reviews the anatomy and physiology of the airway and ventilation and differentiates between respiratory distress and failure. Additionally, it presents two different respiratory distress case studies in which the AMLS Assessment Pathway is used to manage patients who are short of breath.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

  • Understand and describe the anatomy and physiology of the airway and ventilation.
  • Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure.
  • Using the Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) Assessment Pathway, discuss management of patients complaining of shortness of breath.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Respiratory Disorders: Game-Based Module (BLS/ALS Edition) course are eligible for 1 hour of continuing education
