This interactive lecture discusses paediatric respiratory emergencies. Respiratory disease is the most frequent paediatric prehospital medical problem, with asthma being the most common. Many illnesses, foreign bodies, and trauma cause respiratory problems in children. Good assessment and early intervention are critical.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

  • Describe the initial respiratory assessment of a pediatric patient.
  • Differentiate respiratory distress from failure in a pediatric patient.
  • Apply appropriate respiratory treatment based on assessment findings in a pediatric patient.
  • Demonstrate understanding of common pediatric respiratory emergencies.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Pediatric Respiratory Emergencies (ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education
