This interactive lecture discusses children with special health care needs (CSHCN) and the specific assessment and management considerations involved in caring for these patients. There are an estimated 12 million children in the United States with special healthcare needs. These children comprise a growing group that uses a significant proportion of emergency medical services resources in the community. Advances in medical science and technology have been instrumental in allowing children with complex medical conditions to live longer and more fulfilling lives, often in the community under the care of family rather than in institutions.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

  • Define CSHCN.
  • Discuss general etiology of CSHCN.
  • List common technology devices used by CSHCN.
  • Describe the role of caregivers of CSHCN.
  • Describe general medical management of CSHCN.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Children with Special Healthcare Needs (ALS Edition) course are eligible for 0.5 hours of continuing education
