iabetes is a common chronic disorder in children. As a prehospital care provider, you will undoubtedly be called upon many times a year to assist children with medical issues related to diabetes. This disease requires a blend of self-care and medical care. Parents, schools, communities, and the health care team must work collaboratively to provide information and training to ensure proper management of the disease.

After completing this course, the practitioner will be able to:

  • Explain the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus (DM) type 1 and type 2.
  • Understand the management of a pediatric patient experiencing a diabetic emergency.
  • Explain the risk factors associated with hypoglycemia in diabetic children.
  • List the symptoms associated with hypoglycemia.
  • Recognize the difference between diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state.

Practitioners who successfully complete the Children with Special Healthcare Needs: Diabetes Emergencies (BLS/ALS) course are eligible for 1 hour of continuing education
