First On The Scene Course - Whats Covered?
This curriculum outlines a comprehensive training programme covering essential first aid and emergency response techniques designed to meet or exceed the standards set by NZQA 6402 and 6401. The programme emphasises practical skills and theoretical understanding, ensuring participants develop the confidence and competence to respond effectively in various emergencies.
Module 1: Emergency Activation and Initial Assessment
This module focuses on the critical first steps in any emergency situation. It covers:
-
Activating the 111 System: Participants will learn the importance of rapid and accurate emergency service activation. This includes detailed instruction on providing clear and concise information to the dispatcher, including location, nature of the emergency, and the number of casualties. Practical exercises will simulate various emergency scenarios, reinforcing the importance of calm and efficient communication under pressure. The process of obtaining consent for treatment will also be covered.
-
Initial Patient Assessment: Participants will learn how to conduct a rapid primary survey to identify and address immediately life-threatening conditions (such as airway obstruction, breathing difficulties, and severe bleeding). This will include the use of standard assessment techniques and the prioritisation of interventions based on the patient's condition. The importance of scene safety and personal protective equipment (PPE) will also be emphasised.
Module 2: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Use
This module provides comprehensive training in CPR and the use of AEDs. It covers:
-
CPR: Participants will learn the correct technique for performing CPR, emphasising chest compressions depth, rate, and minimising interruptions. This will include practical training on adult, child, and infant CPR techniques, with an emphasis on recognising the signs of cardiac arrest and initiating CPR promptly.
-
AED Use: Participants will learn how to safely and effectively operate an AED, including recognising the indications for defibrillation, attaching the pads correctly, and following the device's voice prompts. The importance of minimizing interruptions to chest compressions during AED use will be highlighted.
Module 3: Advanced Interventions
This module includes optional advanced interventions, depending on the specific course requirements and participant needs. It may include:
-
Administering Epinephrine (Epi-Pens): Participants will learn how to recognise anaphylaxis, use epinephrine auto-injectors (Epi-Pens) appropriately, and post-administration care. This will include practical training on administering Epi-Pens, recognising potential side effects, and seeking immediate medical attention after administration.
Module 4: Trauma & Medical
This module focuses on managing life-threatening injuries, including:
-
Responding to Life-Threatening Bleeding: Participants will learn various techniques for controlling severe bleeding, including direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquet application. This will include practical training on applying tourniquets correctly and understanding the potential complications. The importance of appropriate documentation and reporting will be emphasised.
-
Trauma: Participants will learn how to recognise and manage fractures and dislocations chest injuries, including the use of appropriate dressings and splinting techniques. Assessing and treating burns and scalds and identifying current treatments.
-
Medical: Breathing difficulties, heart conditions, stroke and seizures.
Module 5: Patient Handling and Transportation
This module covers safe and effective patient handling and transportation techniques. It includes:
-
Moving Patients to Safety: Participants will learn various techniques for moving injured patients, including the appropriate use of drags, carries, and lifting techniques. This will include practical training on moving patients safely and efficiently while minimising further injury. The importance of considering the patient's condition and the environment will be emphasised.
-
Positioning Injured Patients: Participants will learn the correct positioning techniques for various injuries, including spinal immobilisation and recovery position. This will include practical training on maintaining spinal alignment and ensuring airway patency.
The FIrst On The Scene Course covers all the requirements of the work based first aid course, and can have additions models or subjects specifically related to your industry and work based risk assessments.
